Choosing a frame that compliments the photo or picture you’re framing while keeping with the decor of your home can be a challenge. Here are some tips to find the perfect frame for your artwork.

First, have your photo, picture, or artwork ready for framing. Knowing what size frame you need is an important step. The frame will need to be bigger than the piece. Remember that there will be a matte around the picture, so go for a frame at least one inch larger than the width and height of your picture.

Second, decide on a style of frame. Frames mostly come in wood and metal. Do you want a frame with a modern look, to go with a sleek interior? You might be interested in a black matte or gloss finish frame. A metal frame could look great in such a setup. On the other hand, wooden frames, especially stained wood, look great with a more traditional interior. Look for an elegant frame, possibly with some gold trim. A third option is a weathered wood frame, which could look great with a country style interior. A store with a large selection of different types of frames can be a big help in this step.

Next, decide on a matte. This is the piece of board that surrounds the picture, in between the picture and the frame. The matte is usually white, but you can get pretty much any color you want. Mattes are cheap and easy to make yourself, but if you don’t want to do the work you can ask somebody at your local hobby store to do it for you. Another option for framing is to simply take your artwork to a framing store, where they’ll ask you what you want and can even do a custom framing job. No matter how you do it, a framed picture will look great for years to come!
